Happy Opening Day!

I'm jealous of those of you who get to attend opening day this afternoon. Enjoy the game and have a hot dog or six for me. (Speaking of hot dogs...Jbeast, when you put up this year's dog count, don't forget I already have three!) I unfortunately have to just wait and hope that my dvr actually records the game off the MLB package which as of this morning, I apparently hadn't ordered even though I distinctly remembering calling Time Warner last Wednesday to make sure I got the magical $20 off Early Bird special. Turns out, the idiot I talked to on Wednesday went ahead and ordered me the MLS package. Honestly...who the EFF watches soccer enough to order a pay-per-view package?!?!?! Anyway, all should be taken care of, and hopefully I'll have the Brewers game waiting for me when I get home from my softball game tonight. Either way, I'd still appreciate a full report from someone who actually went to the game. Go Brewars!!! :)

so lovely south bend picked up the boston game and a mets game on their espn 1 and 2 channels, so I was unable to watch the game. Getting the play by play on the computer was a bit tedious and I definately checked at least two different sites to make sure that JJ Hardy did indeed hit a homerun. Other than that, way to go Carl Lee and the Brewers for beating a bunny of an opening day opponent.

Brew City Bub an I sat and enjoyed a good father son afternoon watching an excellent game. Dick Weeks almost ran us (did Ned green light him???) out of a win with a stupid attempt to stretch a routine single into a double......but thanks to Cirillo and El Caballero (as the lady in front of us kept calling him) we saw a good outcome. Lee must have fouled off 15 pitches, sending two deep but foul before hitting his 8th innning tater.

I kind of like the name El Caballero......

Good times were had by all. Things got pretty silly.

The Lee AB was largely the product of a rookie pitcher, Matt Capps, who was rushed to the majors and did not have enough gas to get it by Lee, nor did he have any other pitches he could throw other than the fastball. When a pitcher throws like 9 straight fastballs and Lee is fouling them all straight back or piss-pounding them foul down the line, maybe that pitcher should try to get him to chase a couple pitches well out of the zone. I'm not really sure why Capps was in that late in a one-run game, but I laugh at Pirates fans that were excited for "the Jim Tracy era" to begin.

In the midst of all the silliness in section 232, I failed to notice whether the Brewers were still doing the crazy shifted "alien" defenses. Did anyone see a big shift in the fielders, probably when Sean Casey or Jeromy Burnitz was up? I have the feeling Robin Yount is going to be a terribly close-minded traditional ass of a bench coach. I hope I'm wrong.

I knew Gabe Gross would come through! Allowing himself to be pinch hit for helped deliver the go-ahead runs.

Tomorrow, at 6:15 y'all's time, and 3:15 my time, the Jays take their first steps towards the World Series.

No alien defenses as far as I could see. That's going to be really fucking frustrating. 8%. we got to 8% more balls on defense last year than any other team. If this shit really continues Melvin will tell Yount to shape up his act.
I definitely enjoyed Lee's HR AB. He kept fouling off those pitches, waiting for Capps to make a huge mistake that he could fuck up, and he did it twice . . . Lee just got a little too around on one. Hopefully he follows that success in future AB's and build up his mid-June trade value.

Blue Jays lose 3-2.

Santana's line:
7 IP, 5 H, 1R, 1ER, 3 BB, 9K
Halladay gives up three solo jacks to Tony Batista. Or, Batista K's three times and is pinch-hit for in the fourth AB.

In terms of Yount, I really don't think GMs are in the habit of telling coaches and managers what to do. I think Yount was Yost's hire more than Melvin, and I don't think Yost is going to tell Yount what to do. GMs really try not to step on the toes of managers. Instead, they let managers do what they want and fire them if they fail. It seems inefficient and wasteful, and indeed I think it is a poor managerial style. Between the awful defense and that wonderful moved-in fence in right field, I think we're going to have a good number of pitchers that witness ERA spikes.

Jim Jammers,

we know of at least one GM who has his manager/coaching staff on strings...Mr. Billiam Q. Beane

Here's why I think Melvin does have his hands in the defensive alignment: the Brewers got to 8% more balls than anybody else last year, and they STILL fired Rich Dauer. If Dauer were truly documented as that effective, there is absolutely no chance he would have been fired. That screams at me that Melvin and his researchers have a lot to do with it.

As far as I could tell at the time, Dauer and Donnelly were both fired because they had difficulties with Ned Yost. Yost wanted a staff that would be on the same page as he. I could be wrong here, but I think the bench coaches and such are more the product of Yost than Melvin.

Great. Just great. Did Dauer get picked up anywhere? I should start rooting for them.
